St. Anthony Of Padua School Black History Program

March 09, 2015

First grade students in Catherine Pate’s Art class worked together on four collages of black Catholic candidates for Sainthood: Father Augustus Tolton, Venerable Pierre Toussaint, Mother Henriette DeLille and Mother Mary Lange, The students enjoyed learning the techniques of collaging and creating portraits. These beautiful collage portraits honoring the candidates for Sainthood were featured during the school’s Black History Program on March 4th. Pictured are four of the first graders who worked on the portraits with Art teacher, Catherine Pate.

As part of their celebration of Black History Month, students at St. Anthony of Padua School learned about Quilts and the Underground Railroad. Members of the Senior Action Quilting Club visited the school and shared their beautiful quilts and the history of quilt codes used in the Underground Railroad.
