The St. Michael Indian School cross country team members jumped at the opportunity to race in the Division IV Arizona state cross country qualifier on November 6, 2020, with less than three weeks of virtual training. The entire girl's team qualified for state and one boy's runner qualified. Girls' team members were Star Anderson, Chiara Holgate, Ashley Phillips, Nizhonibaa Phillips, Aurianna Quintana, Lynelle Slim, Amber Woody, and Brianna Williams. Competing for the boys was Kyler Williams. The girls placed 9th in the state and were the only team from the Navajo Nation to compete. The team faced challenges of no in-person coaching with teammates or with coaches. Currently, the basketball season is in limbo for Arizona as the state battles the ongoing increase of COVID-19 cases. Under the Navajo Nation, public health orders there can be no youth sports. Plans to virtual coach players are in review for both middle and high school teams.
