Busy Bees

November 08, 2019

St. Lawrence School

St. Lawrence School’s Kindergarten and Second Grade classes were busy as bees while working on their project-based learning activity this week. The subject? You guessed it, bees! The classes watched and discussed videos on how bees make honey, and how and why flowers are pollinated. The activity consisted of students making flower models out of paper and bee models out of pipe cleaners. In the middle of the flower was our “sticky stigma”, double sided tape. The students got in pairs of two; one student had coffee grinds, while the other had green sugar. Using their bees, the students buzzed from flower to flower, to see that each of their flowers ended up with both substances on it. The students got to observe what happens to flower’s pollen during this process. The students were able to understand how important bees are and how we must do our part to protect them.
