St. Lucy's Church, Syracuse NY
St. Lucy’s parish in Syracuse NY held their annual St. Kateri Tekakwitha Spring Mass on Saturday April 27, 2018.
The mass which combines both English and Mohawk languages is held every April. The songs and prayers are in Mohawk. The St. Kateri mass booklets translates the Mohawk songs and prayers phonetically so that all congregation members can participate. Each year recognition in the form of a Fellowship award, is given to a community member who has been a supporter of the St. Kateri Chapel, committee and mission.
This year in conjunction with the mass, the St. Kateri committee provided a tour of the St. Kateri Chapel and the Grotto for the Sunday school children at St. Lucy’s. In addition to the tour, the children learned about St. Kateri, her life and her devotion to Jesus. The children were especially fascinated by the fact that St. Kateri lived only a couple of hours away from Syracuse, in Fonda NY. The children had snacks, received books to take home as well as a Magnet to share with their family.
The next event for the St. Kateri Tekakwitha committee will be the annual Fallen Leaves mass in November. These two masses are conducted in both English and Mohawk and include a feast for all participants to honor St. Kateri Tekakwitha.
