Winter into Spring

March 02, 2020

Diocese of Sioux Falls

Greetings once again to all from the snow covered plains of South Dakota and the Diocese of Sioux Falls. This truly has been a long winter for us here, especially in the far north regions where the snow has been heavy and the howling winds oh so intense. We all await the coming of spring’s warmth, sunshine, and breezes. We are anxiously awaiting the longer days of the sun’s rays, and our patience is paying off with the gift of a little more light both in the morning and the evening each passing day. About the only ones disappointed that winter maybe leaving are the children who love to play in the snow. They warm the hearts of the elders watching them enjoy the wonders of God’s creation in their play. Their carefree voices assist in reminding all that the good energy of life brings so many blessings.

Up in the northeast portion of the Diocese is St Kateri Parish in Sisseton, SD. Many projects have been in play this winter under Fr. Jerry Ranek’s guiding hand. One catechumen for entrance into the Catholic faith is in formation and God willing, will be ready for initiation into the faith by Easter. Preparation for the publication of an up-dated version of the parish Dakota Hymnal is another project that is moving forward. Many of the songs are being translated from Lakota, which is language used west of the Missouri River, to Dakota, which is spoken east of the great river. The process is now in the hands of the elders of the faith community who are making sure the words and phrases being used are correct. And to help with additional funding for the parish and the projects, a winter bingo season brings many together for some fun and community building.

Two other up-dates: We have a new Bishop as of February 13. Bishop Donald DeGrood comes to us from the Minneapolis area. His Ordination Mass was celebrated throughout the Diocese with live streaming from the Diocesan web site to accommodate those unable to attend the celebration in person. And we also now have a native deacon serving St. Paul’s parish in Marty, SD. Deacon Harold Condon and his wife Geraldine arrived late last fall and are getting settled into their life of ministry with the faith community at Marty. We welcome them both for their service to the Lord.

May your Lenten journey be one that is rewarding and grace filled. Please keep all of us out here on the Dakota plains in your prayers. Yours in Christ, Deacon Chet and Colleen Cordell.
