Sister Thea Bowman Black Catholic Education Foundation
At the conclusion of the Annual Scholarship Dinner at Duquesne University, Foundation Board Member Bishop Joseph R. Kopacz of Jackson, Mississippi, offered attendees an encouraging update on the cause for canonization of the Foundation’s namesake, Sister Thea Bowman.
Bishop Kopacz shared that significant progress continues in the process, noting that the extensive documentation supporting Sister Thea’s cause has been submitted and is being carefully reviewed.
“Our postulator felt that her cause is very solid, is on solid ground,” Bishop Kopacz said. He explained that the postulator, who is responsible for guiding the cause through the Vatican process, is preparing the comprehensive documentation needed for the next phase. “He feels in about four years that (her cause) will be in the hands of the Holy Father, and his approval will advance her to the second stage of canonization, which is Venerable.”
Bishop Kopacz asked supporters to continue praying for the cause, saying, “Your prayers are most appreciated, and what a blessing to be part of that cause and to know her.”
Reflecting on Sister Thea’s enduring impact, he added, “Her spirit is even stronger in our nation and beyond at a time that is so needed.”
He also connected Sister Thea’s legacy to the mission of the Foundation that bears her name, sharing that it is her spirit that continues to guide the Foundation and she would be elated that it provides opportunities for its Scholars to thrive.
Closing his remarks, Bishop Kopacz thanked supporters for their commitment to advancing educational opportunities for young people and for helping carry forward Sister Thea’s vision through the Foundation’s work.
