Basilica of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception
In our year-end celebration parents and children at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception gathered to review the year and make plans for continuing formation in their homes over the summer.
Preschool students were shy when they recited the class prayer but were exuberant when they sang a song for their parents. Second grade students drew pictures of parishioners receiving the sacraments- a baby being baptize, classmates receiving the Eucharist were favorites.
In a middle school class, parents guessed the Sacrament and related hints the children acted out in a game of charades. They admitted that naming the sacrament was easier that explaining some of the hints. During the year, students added prayers, drawings, cards, personal reflections and class activities to a “keepsake” envelope. Parents were moved by the significance and reverence of some items, some of which will be displayed in the home.
High school students and parents received prizes for correctly stating the questions for answers given in a Jeopardy style game. Students took home “treat bags” that included scriptures to help them stay close to God until they return to class next year.
We are grateful a grant from the Black and Indian Mission which helped us to enhance our Christian formation program.
