Mayor Robert Sullivan Visits Cardinal Spellman for Black History Month

April 26, 2022

Cardinal Spellman High School

Mayor Robert Sullivan paid a special visit to Cardinal Spellman for Black History Month. During his visit, the Mayor met with members of the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Club (JEDI) and gifted our school with a piece of the Liberty Tree. The Liberty Tree was a tree in Brockton that Frederick Douglas would lean on when he would preach about the evils of slavery.

In keeping with today’s theme, “Throwback Thursday,” the Mayor referenced famous orators like Frederick Douglass who made frequent trips to Brockton. He further explained that back in the era when slavery was prevalent in the South, Brockton was a place that supported the liberation of Black people, and was a stop on the underground railroad. Thank you Mayor Robert Sullivan for an awesome visit and for the work you do for our city!
