St. Martin de Porres Catholic School
St. Martin de Porres Catholic School’s mission is to educate children of diverse faiths and backgrounds with an emphasis on religion and high academics. Our faculty and staff members are dedicated, united, and committed to our religion teachings, moral values, and educational standards.
The funds provided by the Catholic Negro American Mission Board have greatly assistance our school in carrying out our mission. Teachers and students are activity engaged in religion, community service, and academics. Students and staff have participated in the following activities:
• February 2019, our school celebrated Black History Month with the theme “The Year of the Veteran. Parishioners and community leaders who are veterans shared with our students their military experiences. Students researched information on African Americans in the all branches of the military and presented during the Black History Program for the parents, parishioners, and the community. The school was highlighted in the Diocese Newspaper, “Catholic Miscellany” in February 2019.
• The last Friday of each month is “Spirit Day” for students and staff. This school year we have added a community service touch. Students and staff wear their favorite cap for $1.00 and teachers their favorite cap and pair of jeans for $3.00. The donations collected on Spirit Day go to support “Capped Kids Help Conquer Cancer”.
• The school held its first Annual Walk-a-Thon to raise funds, support healthy lifestyles, and have fun! The students, staff, and parents walked several laps around the Historical Martin Luther King Park. This was truly a fun day!
The generous grant funds the Negro Catholic Mission Board continues to make our mission of educating students in spirit, mind, and body a reality.
