Washington School for Girls Adjusts to Distance Learning

June 04, 2020

Washington School for Girls

Like all schools throughout the country, Washington School for Girls has been greatly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since March 14, WSG has been operating remotely and providing distance learning to our students. This has been a significant adjustment for our community, one that has been made possible thanks to our excellent teachers who are responding with grace, flexibility, and open mindedness, as well as our robust community of philanthropic supporters who have helped WSG build its technology infrastructure over the past several years. We are proud of the extremely high participation and engagement of our students in our distance learning program, with a 95% daily attendance rate.

Our priorities during this time have been to continue student learning, support students’ emotional well-being, and foster a strong sense of community. Each day, students receive a blend of direct group instruction with their teachers and peers via virtual classrooms and age-appropriate independent work. When not in “class”, students can video-chat with their teachers during office hours for one-on-one help and receive specialized support in reading and math. Our virtual classrooms and student-led morning prayer create opportunities for our students to connect with one another and the caring adults in the WSG community while also offering the comfort of normalcy and structure. WSG continues to support our families, who have already been economically impacted by the sweeping closures in our region, by providing meal assistance and at-home technology directly and through our program partners.
