University of Notre Dame Visit

December 02, 2019

St. Joseph Mission School

St. Joseph Middle School students on May 7th boarded the Amtrak train that would eventually take them to the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana for two days. There they would meet Yvette Pino a 2014 graduate of St. Joseph Mission School. Yvette was part of the student group giving tours for our students. St. Joseph School students learned that Notre Dame was founded in 1842 by a young priest, Fr. Edward Sorin of the Congregation of the Holy Cross. The first students of Notre Dame were Native Americans from the Potawatomi tribe. Students were able to visit some of the original buildings. They learned about Fr. Theodore Hesburg, CSC, who was the President of Notre Dame from 1952 to 1987. He was friends with many famous people, including Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Obama. He also befriended Martin Luther King Jr. and was part of the Civil Rights movement during the 1960's. One of the highlights for the students was the moment they were able to go on to the Notre Dame football field. Afterwards, they were able to meet Michael McNeill of the Chicago Blackhawks at the Notre Dame Hockey rink. He was able to give them a few pointers on ice skating as well as autographing their hoodies. The students learned that to prepare for any vocational school or a college like Notre Dame they must work hard in their studies and all initiative must come from their hearts and not from teachers or parents.
