St. Lawrence School
Black History Month was celebrated at our school, but our first grade class did an outstanding job with their "Living Museum" presentations. The project began with lessons about different famous Black Americans. Each day we learned and discussed a person and their achievement. Afterward, the students completed comprehension questions about each person discussed.
For the project, each student was given the name of a famous person (author, activist, scientist, or performer) which they researched at home. Students had to write a paragraph telling about that person. Students needed to include, a little information about the person's life, what their achievement was, and why it is important. Students then prepared a presentation in a "Living Museum". The children had to dress up and pretend to be that person. Parents, teachers and students visited our "Living Museum” by walking around in small groups and listening to each student's presentation. The students used various materials such as, poster boards displaying information, props, and PowerPoint presentations. The first grade class did an excellent job and made Black History come to life. It was a very successful event.
