Pierre Toussaint Scholars Program

First Quarter (January 1 – February 29, 2024)

  • After submitting their 1st semester grades (3.0 minimum GPA required), Pierre Toussaint Scholars, with the generous support of the Black and Indian Mission Fund, received their scholarship awards for the spring semester (1/2 their annual awards). Some of the schools that our P.T. scholars are attending include Providence College, Fordham University, University of Mount Saint Vincent, College of the Holy Cross, Georgetown University, Loyola University of New Orleans, Fairfield University, St. John’s University, Manhattan College, Seton Hall University, Boston College, Iona University, St. John Fisher University and Villanova University.January 4th – Winter Workshop – topic “Leaders of Now” with 5 different workshops for the Pierre Toussaint scholars to choose from, held at the New York Institute of Technology (NYC) / American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid Training Certification was offered (12 scholars were certified).
  • January 11th – Mental Health First Aid Training / Certification held at the Catholic Center (14 scholars were certified, along with 2 seniors from Xavier High School were certified).
  • January 12th – PT Graduate Scholar, Tyler Gaston, was interviewed by the Catholic Charities Executive Director, Msgr. Kevin Sullivan, on his Sirius XM Radio JustLove Show for the MLK weekend episode.
  • January 15th – MLK Day of Service Project done in collaboration with Catholic Charities working with the UJA Federation of New York (United Jewish Appeal). Scholars assisted with packing food essentials like Halal food boxes, emergency food boxes, and spice kits, as well as packed literacy kits for New Yorkers in need.
  • February 12th – St. Thomas Aquinas College (Sparkill, NY) MLK Fireside Chat with Martin Luther King, Jr. III (2 scholars attended).
  • February 13th – Premiere of the movie “Cabrini” on the life story of Mother Cabrini at the Sheen Center in Manhattan (4 scholars attended).
  • February 14 – March 31st – Lenten Resources / Lenten Video Series emailed weekly to all scholars during Lent.
