Archdiocese of Detroit Cultural Ministries and Black Catholic Ministry

On August 31, St. Moses the Black Parish hosted the annual "Holy Mass with a Musical Setting to Honor the Culture of Jazz in Detroit." This event drew over 400 participants from across the Archdiocese and beyond.

The Mass, which coincided with the Detroit Jazz Festival, was offered by Fr. Francis Asomkase, SSJ, with concelebrants Fr. Charles Nwamadi, SSJ, and Fr. Richard Baumann, SJ. Sponsored by the Archdiocese of Detroit’s Office of Cultural Ministries and Black Catholic Ministry, the event integrated the traditional Eucharistic liturgy with Will Todd’s Mass in Blue. The soulful singing and dynamic jazz harmonies honored Detroit’s rich musical heritage, demonstrating how faith sanctifies cultural traditions.

The Mass in Blue consists of several movements, including the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei, each infused with jazz elements that reflect Todd's background as both a classical and jazz musician.

The spiritual impact was significant, with many participants reporting encountering Jesus Christ in a brand-new way. The unique setting fostered awe and reverence, successfully leading hundreds of people to a profound, personal, and Christ-centered worship experience.
