Cardinal Spellman High School
As part of its Black History Month celebration, the JEDI Team at Cardinal Spellman High School welcomed NFL referee and Harvard-trained attorney Ronald Torbert for a powerful conversation with students centered on perseverance, faith, and purpose.
Mr. Torbert, a two-time Super Bowl referee, shared the story of his professional journey—from studying political science and earning his law degree to ultimately serving on the NFL’s biggest stage. In 2014, he became the fifth African American to serve as an NFL crew chief, later becoming the first African American crew chief to officiate two Super Bowls. Yet he reminded students that success is not about accolades, but about commitment to one’s calling and daily dedication to growth.
Throughout his remarks, Mr. Torbert emphasized that preparation builds confidence and that each step in life forms us for what lies ahead. He encouraged students to “be where your feet are,” focusing on the present moment rather than becoming overwhelmed by the future. Grounded in his faith and strengthened by the support of his family, he spoke openly about the role that trust in God played in his journey.
During Black History Month, his witness carried particular significance. His achievements reflect both the progress made and the responsibility to continue striving for excellence and equity. For our students, many of whom come from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, his story was a powerful example of how faith, discipline, and perseverance can open doors once thought unreachable.
Events like this affirm Cardinal Spellman’s Catholic mission to recognize the God-given gifts and unique potential of every student, celebrate diversity within our community, and form young people who will use their talents in service to Christ and the World.
