Extra Mile Education Foundation Supported Schools - Sr. Thea Bowman Catholic Academy, Northside Catholic Assumption Academy, St. Benedict the Moor School
This June, St. Benedict the Moor School in Pittsburgh’s Hill District welcomed back its beloved summer enrichment program, Camp Invention!
Camp Invention is a weeklong, hands-on, educational program from the National Inventors Hall of Fame that inspires curiosity of the sciences and builds exploratory confidence in students from kindergarten through sixth grade. The Camp partners with 2,500 schools and districts across America and serves an estimated 130,000 children annually. It is nationally acclaimed for its interactive modules and exercises, how it promotes STEM learning, and helps young students develop critical leadership, resourcefulness, and investigative skills. This experience is paramount to our students.
Each year, the camp declares a new theme for their curriculum. In this year’s program, titled, “Discover,” students uncovered the science behind optical illusions and tricks used in theme parks and theaters; built prototypes of their own AI-inspired assistants and custom control panels with a transmitter and receiver; built functional claw machines out of cardboard; and learned about penguins and the climate of Antarctica, and the technology and training it takes to make an expedition to the frozen continent; and so much more.
The fun-filled week came to a close with final lessons and a celebratory water balloon toss. But already, our students and faculty can’t wait for next summer and the new lessons Camp Invention will have in store!
