St. Joseph Goes to KUJENGA

Office of Multicultural Ministries, Diocese of Arlington

On Friday, March 2 through Sunday, March 4, the Office of Multicultural Ministries supported several members of St. Joseph of Alexandria who attended "Kujenga", a leadership building youth retreat in the Diocese of Richmond. The Swahili word, "to build", Kujenga was held at the Roslyn Conference and Retreat Center, and was headed by leaders assigned to family roles such as Aunts and Uncles. All the "families" were asked to choose a Swahili Family Name that suited their particular family charism. There were interactive presentations given on each of the seven principles of the Nguzo Saba (African-American Catholic Principles and the seven principles of Kwanzaa). Before every presentation of a principle, one candle of the Kinara (Swahili word for candle holder) was lit. The young men and women involved were also encouraged to explore their identity as male and female African American Catholics.
