St. Augustine Indian Misssion
St. Augustine Indian Mission School teachers were eager to welcome students back to school on August 18. The day began with a special drum ceremony by members of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, a blessing by our director, Fr. Mark Beran, and a flag ceremony conducted by the 8th-grade class. Grades 4-8 participated in the outdoor festivities while the K-3 students watch a live-streamed video. Unfortunately, concerns over Covid variants preclude gathering the students together.
It was delightful to see the children race inside the school, to give high fives to our principal, Deacon Don Blackbird, and assistant principal Amber Gamble. They were excited to see their friends, new teachers, and the new school supplies and backpacks waiting in the classrooms.
The first day of school was the last, first day of school in our old building scheduled to close in May of 2022. Students will return to a new St. Augustine School next August.
We would not be able to continue the vital work of educating and inspiring the children of the Omaha and Winnebago Tribes of Nebraska without the support of wonderful donors like the Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions.
