Sisters Academy of Baltimore
Bridging the gap found with women in STEM, Sisters Academy of Baltimore is bringing new and exciting experiences to their students. Trips to local watersheds like Masonville Cove and the National Aquarium have taken students outside the classroom to see firsthand the importance and influence that science, technology, engineering, and mathematics can have on our everyday life. As part of their field trip to Masonville Cove, our students were introduced to Captain Trash Wheel. Students learned the importance of solar and hydropower as it relates to how the trash wheel pulls hundreds of tons of trash from the water each year. In addition to visiting Masonville Cove, some 6th grade students embarked on a trip to the National Aquarium in order to study marine life. While students observed the exhibits and participated in group discussions relating to the different types of marine life, they were offered the opportunity to safely touch a horseshoe crab and jellyfish.
Supplementary to learning outside the classroom, Sisters Academy science teacher, Ms. Williams, offers a stimulating course comprised of the scientific method, microscopic organism discovery, data collection, and element experimentation inside the classroom. Sisters Academy students are constantly utilizing STEM skills learned in the classroom to complete a variety of projects that show concept realization. For example, Sisters Academy students are currently creating the subsystems of earth’s spheres using color coded Jenga blocks, manipulating various Lego pieces to create sound structures, and molding natural materials to form a bird’s nest. Throughout it all, students are exploring, experimenting, and expanding their scientific horizons with the goal for them to be empowered to take one step closer into a STEM career.
