Diocese of Gallup -"A Poor Diocese Who Serves the Poor"

March 29, 2019
St. John - Tegakwitha Mission

Diocese of Gallup

The Diocese of Gallup is the poorest diocese in the nation. Many canonized saints have come to serve here or desired to serve here. Among them, the famous St. Katherine Drexel, who built many things, including what was, probably the first mission parish, named for St. Kateri, in the U.S. It is known as St. John Evangelist/Tegakwitha Mission in Houck, AZ. The "g" was used by the original pastor, at the time, in order to help the Native Americans pronounce the Saint's name. The parish is still active today.
