St Kateri Tekakwitha Mission Church has had a few months of both excitement and sadness. Bidding farewell to Fr Bala was difficult for many; it seemed we had just begun to know him and off he goes to Napa. Anyway, as he so rightly reminded us, that is the obedient life of a priest. St Kateri is blessed to welcome Fr Francis as their Parish Priest. It is easy to accept because the congregation is already familiar with his gentle manner. The parish is also looking forward to meeting and getting to know Fr Andrew Pacheco.
St Kateri has many visitors during the summer months and this year is no exception. The church is invigorated by the addition of new faces; and invites travelling musicians to gift us with their contributions. Many repairs have been achieved; the roof leaks are fixed and some upkeep has been done on the rectory. The congregation is very grateful to Lou Bull, who has contributed in so many ways, and who is moving to Eureka soon. The Finance Committee will be assuming some of his duties.
July 14th, the feast of St Kateri was celebrated on Bald Hill with a beautiful prayer service in her honor, followed by a potluck of wonderful healthy food from the kitchens and gardens of the local people. Dan Shay came all the way from Santa Rosa to celebrate with us.
On July 16th, St Kateri welcomed two new Catholics, Joan and Nora Niday. Their baptism presided by Fr. Bala, was a joyous occasion, with all their family and lots of children in attendance. The church was full to overflowing; and all the children enjoyed blackberry picking after Mass.
St Kateri is an ideal location for retreats. Set in the beautiful grounds by the Trinity River, the natural beauty is conducive to contemplation and inspiration. Groups wanting to make Kateri a destination point for a small group retreat can inquire by calling Fr Francis at 707-822-7696.
