Learning to plant a native garden

January 25, 2025

Gesu Catholic School

Gesu students have the opportunity to participate in the Gesu Science Club which works to help Gesu be more environmentally sustainable now and in the future. This year, the Science Club is working to turn Gesu’s newly constructed parking lots into an area that supports native plants and hopefully will encourage native insects to thrive in this area. The Science Club students wrote letters to landscape supply companies in the Detroit area and asked if they could donate native plants for this area. Fortunately, one company donated 9 trees, 10 bushes and 15 grass plants for this area and parishioners and parents donated over 1800 daffodil bulbs to brighten this area. The students then met with The Greening of Detroit for a lesson on how to correctly plant a tree. The students learned from the instructor and then divided into groups and worked with community volunteers to plant these items. Although it was a cold week in November to do this work, the students learned a lot and by the end of the week, all the donations had been planted. We look forward to the springtime when hopefully each of these plants will bloom and grow and there will be a sea of yellow as the daffodils bloom.
