Lent 2015
Pope Francis’ emphasis on the plight of the poor and marginalized has brought new energy to the work of service and social justice in the Catholic Church. “Lent is a fitting time for self-denial; we would do well to ask ourselves what we can give up in order to help and enrich others by our own poverty. Let us not forget that real poverty hurts: no self-denial is
real without this dimension of penance. I distrust a charity that costs nothing and does not hurt.” Pope Francis – Lent, 2014
Devoted administrators and teachers in our Black Catholic Schools are concerned about the plight of their students and the crying need for evangelization, self-esteem, quality academics and cultural appreciation. In this Lenten Appeal I ask you to consider giving until it hurts but know that it undeniably helps the young hearts and minds of our Black children. Your personal sacrifice this holy season, can nurture spiritual and intellectual growth among Catholic African-American classrooms and students. Your fervent prayers, self-denial and compassionate love will make a difference to the ministry of the Catholic Negro American Mission Board in its outreach from coast to coast.
May this holy season of Lent culminate in Resurrection joy for you and those you love. Thank you for your help! I will remember you in my Mass on Easter Sunday.
Wishing you Resurrection joy,
Rev. Wayne C. Paysse
