St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish in Dearborn hosted a traveling art exhibit of Black Catholic saints and heroes Nov. 20, celebrating Detroit's heritage and tradition of faith in honor of Black Catholic History Month.
Fr. Henry Sands, executive director of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Black and Indian Mission Office in Washington, D.C., and a priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit, gave a presentation titled "Holy Men and Women of God: Sacred Images and Stories for Black Catholic History Month."
The traveling art exhibit was created last year as a partnership between the Archdiocese of Detroit's Office of Cultural Ministries, the Catholic Foundation of Michigan and the College of Creative Studies to highlight and celebrate Black Catholics and their artists.
The paintings, done by artists from the College of Creative Studies, include those on the road to sainthood, such as Sr. Thea Bowman, as well as cultural Black Catholic icons such as Kobe Bryant.
