St. Mary Cathedral School
As the 4th grade students at St. Mary’s work diligently to complete their projects, Miss Hilburn is close by, gently guiding the students through the process of invention. For the last several weeks, her class has been working on engineering hurricane, wind, and flood safe structures for Florida’s future. The project required students to study the geographical areas impacted by hurricanes and learn about the social and environmental impacts. In addition to researching and developing different types of structures that could sustain hurricane winds and rain, the students also participated in a letter writing campaign that reached out to other students affected by hurricanes and offered them solace and prayers of comfort. These types of cross curricular and innovative lessons are the forte of Miss Hilburn’s teaching talent, and they are helping to transform her classroom into a creative hub of engaged and empowered students.
A recent transfer from Jacksonville, FL, and a graduate of FIU, Miss Hilburn is a welcome new addition to the faculty at St. Mary’s Cathedral School. She is a highly qualified, motivated and Catholic educator that is innovative in the classroom, and we are happy that she is a part of our SMCS Family.
