Covid-19 changes mission's religious ed

November 17, 2020

St. Francis Mission

In our Todd County, S.D., communities, there has been substantial community spread of the coronavirus and 10 deaths due to Covid-19, as of Nov. 15. There have been 711 positive tests and the positivity test rate is nearly 40 percent.

Consequently, implementation of the Religious Education program at St. Francis Mission has changed dramatically because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the past, classes were held during the school day in various public schools and at our CYO building. Now, since we can no longer go into the schools or take the children out, we had to let our two part-time catechists go. Our director, Jenny Black Bear, is reaching out to students by mail, email, and phone and offering online classes for interested families.

Small classes for First Reconciliation and Communion will begin this month. The SFM Youth Group, which is small, can still safely meet in the person while following safety guidelines.
