St. Stephens Mission Church
The summer has been exceptionally hot here at Saint Stephens Indian Mission, with temperatures soaring to nearly 100 degrees daily. Despite the relentless heat, we have diligently worked to keep our grass verdant and the grounds inviting.
In June, we had the privilege of hosting a week-long book retreat for the renowned author Margaret Coel. Forty attendees from across the nation gathered to immerse themselves in the region that serves as the backdrop for her captivating mystery novels.
Throughout their stay, participants engaged in insightful book discussions with the author, embarked on a picturesque hayride to view the herd of bison on the Mission's property, and enjoyed a day trip to Thermopolis, Wyoming. There, they explored the Western History Museum and luxuriated in the famous hot springs, generously gifted to the state of Wyoming by the Shoshoni tribe. Additionally, they toured the Shoshone part of the Wind River Reservation and experienced the profound tradition of a sweat lodge ceremony. The retreat culminated in a captivating concert by Wind River native Abraham Thomas and a mesmerizing performance by the local Wind River Dancers.
Furthermore, the Mission has made significant strides in collaborating with the tribes and local groups to utilize the Keel gym. We have proudly hosted numerous basketball games, tournaments, and practices, catering to locals of all ages.
In conclusion, despite the sweltering heat at Saint Stephens Indian Mission this summer, we successfully maintained our welcoming grounds and hosted a memorable week-long book retreat with author Margaret Coel. Attendees enjoyed engaging discussions, local excursions, and cultural experiences that highlighted the rich heritage of the region. In addition, our continued collaboration with local tribes and groups in using the Keel gym has fostered a sense of community and provided recreational opportunities for people of all ages. These efforts underscore our commitment to making the Mission a vibrant and inclusive place for everyone.
