This quarter the students at Holy Family Classical School celebrated All Saints Day in a big way! Each student came to school dressed as their favorite saint. The school gathered together, and each student performed a skit involving or introduced their favorite saint. The students were riveted! Superheroes throughout the ages were represented. Many children were introduced to particular saints for the first time. This type of student led activity is a true testament to students evangelizing to one another. A panel of judges, comprised of parents and teachers, voted for the best saint skit from each class, and the finalists were scheduled for the following day.
Among the crowd favorites were St Kateri and St Katharine Drexel. St. Katharine Drexel, the patroness of our school. In the words of her biographer Cheryl Hughes, St. Katharine Drexel was a “riches to rags” American saint. Katharine was a wealthy heiress who could have lived a comfortable life in high society, but instead founded an order of nuns - and that order of nuns started schools all over the country for disadvantaged Native American and African American children. Holy Family Classical School is one of those schools, founded in 1899. Through generous donors, we are able to keep St. Katharine’s mission alive here at Holy Family Classical School.
The following day, the finalists reenacted their skits for parents and one another. The ultimate winner was Freddy Calvani in the 6th grade portraying St. Thomas Moore. Freddy rallied his classmates to help with his skit. They gave biographical information, and they even depicted his eventual beheading.
