Race for Change

May 04, 2023

York Catholic High School

York Catholic Middle & High School is grateful for the grant received from the Black and Indian Mission Office that has helped to supplement teachers’ salaries for those who work toward promoting diversity and equity within our school community.

Mrs. Dynellia Washington is the chair of our business department and teaches entrepreneurship, accounting, personal finance, and business to our students. When the class day ends, she moderates our student Diversity Club. The club meets weekly to discuss and plan ways to encourage unity, diversity, respect, and kindness among all individuals. One of the events they planned in the spring of 2023 was a Race for Change, a 2-mile walk/run meant to combat prejudice and spread equity awareness.

The students promoted the event, organized registration, arranged for snack and drink donations, set-up the course, and distributed prizes. Our local police department even got in on the action and donated water, fruit, and granola bars. A change in the weather forecast forced them to pivot their outdoor plans and be prepared to transition to an indoor event at the last minute if necessary. The participants braved a few raindrops and pulled together to enjoy a great event to promote diversity and acceptance within the community.
