St Peter Claver Catholic School
St. Peter Claver Catholic School was established in Pleasant Hill in 1903 by St. Katharine Drexel to minister to the Black Catholics of Macon, Georgia. Pleasant Hill was once a thriving African-American neighborhood but since the 1960s, with the exodus of the resident middle class and decades of dis-investment, it fell into a sharp decline. Now the neighborhood is one of concentrated unemployment, poverty and blight but still has a strong sense of history and neighborhood. St Peter Claver Catholic School has been a beating heart in this community for generations. The school mission is to provide a quality Catholic education to a diverse student body so that they are academically prepared and service oriented. Part of this is instilling in students the value of taking an active role in the upkeep and maintenance of their communities. On February 22, 2019 the whole of St. Peter Claver Middle School accompanied their teachers and Mrs. Rebecca Winslow, Religious Instruction Teacher and Fr. John Coughlin, OFM and School Chaplin out into our neighborhood. They worked hard and together with a bunch of other kids and friends, collected over 1,000 gallons of trash and made a real difference in their school neighborhood. They met many neighbors as they walked the streets, made lots of friends, did some real good work and got to see the newly renovated Little Richard House, Community Resource Center too.
